Storm Goretti has now passed, but its impact across Cornwall has been significant. Many communities experienced extensive damage, with prolonged power outages, loss of water supplies, and failures in mobile and landline communications. Some areas were without essential services for days.

Events like this underline why work has been underway to develop a Community Emergency and Civil Contingency Plan for the parish, led by Forrabury & Minster Parish Council. That work continues — but recent events have shown clearly that a plan is only effective if it reflects the people, skills, and resources available locally.

We are now renewing our call for community involvement.

This includes:

• Community volunteers, willing to assist safely during emergencies

• Practical skills, such as chainsaw use (with appropriate certification), building or electrical experience

• Resources, including generators, tools, temporary power or lighting

• Communications capability, such as satellite phones or radios

• Vehicles or access support, where safe and appropriately insured

You do not need to commit to any role or availability. Simply knowing what help or equipment exists within the parish allows realistic and safe planning before the next emergency occurs.
